MAJOR LEAGUE SPORTS Prologue:
In the United States according to the recent records, there are about
108 Basketball, Baseball, Hockey and Football teams, which regularly
participate, in the major league level matches. Teams are normally
valued by their capability at income generation. This again, depends on
the income generating capabilities of the stadium where the sport is
held. A stadium with a 20,000 seating capacity cannot be expected to
generate an income, which a 50,000 seating capacity stadium can
generate. It has now become important to have a stadium with exceptional
facilities with a vast seating arrangement! Major
League Baseball: The
Major League Baseball (MLB) was established in the year 1876 AD.
Season:
April through Mid October. Per
team play: More than 75 games
on account of a large pool of games, baseball is credited with very high
fan attendance than other games; normally around 45 to 50 million per
season. However, the revenue generation through ticket sales is less
because of lower pricing of tickets compared to other commercialized
games. Major
League Basketball: The
National Basketball Association (NBA) was established in the year 1940.
It has about 27 teams in the USA and 2 in Canada. Season:
October through April. Regular
Season Matches: About 35 to
45. The owners are invariably big-ticket corporate entities. The trend
is that such corporate entities also keep hockey teams under their
tutelage. Basketball attracts sell out crowds as they have stars like
Michael Jordan whose name alone has the potential to attract fans from
afar. Major
League Hockey: The
National Hockey League (NHL) was established in the year 1917 AD. Canada
has 5 teams and the USA has as many as 21 teams under NHL. Season:
October to April. Games:
Not less than 40 games per season. Today hockey has good following not
only in the North but South as well. Major
League Football: The
National Football League (NFL) was established in the year 1921.
Season:
September through December. Played on a weekly basis. Games are few and this aids in large audience turnout. It is considered the best winter pastime. |
